"That's just the way I am."
"I've always been this way."
"Nothing I've tried has worked."
"I can't."
Those are a few of the things I hear clients tell themselves about why there's no way they can change the things that they would like to change. They explain why they shouldn't even try. They share why it's impossible. They share why nothing will ever work.
I get it. I used to think that way too. Then I started working with an Executive Coach. Then I decided to become an Executive Coach. Do you know what I hear now? The equivalent of:
"I tried to read once as a child, but I'm just illiterate."
I hear someone who just expects to already know tools and techniques they haven't learned yet. I hear someone who doesn't understand yet that everything they've learned and every way they've grown up to this point is all proof that they can change. I hear someone who doesn't understand yet that it's OK not to know how to do it. And who doesn't understand yet that not knowing how to do it doesn't mean that it can't be done.
I also hear someone who is scared. This is completely understandable because change is scary. What if more is possible? Will things be even harder? What will that mean about them that they waited so long to change? That they couldn't do it on their own?
Do you know what it really means?
It means that you're ready now and that now is when you're supposed to be ready.
